How to Find Your Purpose in Life
Matthew BellShare
In today’s world, many people wrestle with the question: “What is my purpose in life?” Whether you’re young and trying to figure out your path, or older and wondering if you’ve missed your calling, the search for purpose is a deep and honest one.
Thankfully, God doesn’t leave us guessing. His Word gives us clear guidance about why we are here and how we can walk in our true calling. This blog will walk you through key Old and New Testament scriptures to help you discover your God-given purpose, using the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible.
God Created You With Purpose – Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)
Explanation:
Even in difficult times, God reminded His people that He has a plan for them. This verse speaks directly to the heart of purpose. The phrase “expected end” means a future filled with hope, direction, and destiny. You are not an accident. You were created intentionally, and God has good plans for your life.
You Were Created for God’s Glory – Isaiah 43:7
“Everyone who is called by my name and for my glory, I have created him, I have made him". – Isaiah 43:7 (WLC)
Explanation:
One of the primary reasons you exist is to glorify God. Your life has value because it reflects the image of your Creator. Whether through your gifts, your words, or your love for others, your purpose is fulfilled when your life points others to God’s glory.
Purpose Begins With Relationship – Matthew 6:33
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
Explanation:
Many people look for purpose in careers, relationships, or achievements. But Jesus said that our first priority should be to seek God’s Kingdom—His rule, His will, His presence. When you pursue relationship with God first, everything else, including your purpose, begins to fall into place.
You Are God’s Workmanship – Ephesians 2:10
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)
Explanation:
You are not just a random result of genetics—you are God’s masterpiece. He has already prepared good works for you to do. Your purpose isn’t something you have to invent—it’s something you discover as you walk with Jesus. You were made to serve, love, create, and reflect Christ.
Delight in God to Discover Purpose – Psalm 37:4-5
“Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” – Psalm 37:4-5 (KJV)
Explanation:
When you take joy in the Lord, He begins to shape your desires to match His will. This doesn’t mean He gives you whatever you want—but that He plants the right desires in your heart and then helps you fulfill them. True purpose flows out of intimacy with God.
Your Calling Is Holy – 2 Timothy 1:9
“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works,
but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” – 2 Timothy 1:9 (KJV)
Explanation:
Your purpose is not based on your performance, achievements, or talents. It is based on God’s grace and His eternal plan. He has called you with a holy calling—meaning your life has sacred significance. You’re not just here to exist; you’re here to live out God’s plan with intentionality.
You’re Called to Be a Light – Matthew 5:14-16
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid…
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV)
Explanation:
Part of your God-given purpose is to shine His light in a dark world. Whether it’s at your job, in your family, at school, or online—your words and actions can reflect Jesus and draw people closer to God. Your light has eternal impact.
Purpose Through Serving Others – Galatians 5:13
“…by love serve one another.” – Galatians 5:13 (KJV)
Explanation:
Purpose is not just about doing something big—it’s about loving people well. Every time you encourage someone, pray for them, or serve with humility, you are walking in your God-given purpose. Jesus said the greatest in the Kingdom is the one who serves (Matthew 23:11).
Trust in the Lord for Direction – Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
Explanation:
You don’t have to figure everything out. When you trust God and acknowledge Him in your decisions, He will guide you step by step into your calling. Purpose isn’t always revealed all at once—it unfolds as you walk in faith and obedience.
Final Encouragement: You Were Made for This
Finding your purpose is not about chasing success or status. It’s about knowing God, reflecting His glory, serving others, and living a life that matters in eternity. God created you on purpose, for a purpose—and He promises to lead you every step of the way.
