How to Walk in the Spirit and Keep Your Eyes on Jesus Daily

Matthew Bell

In today’s world, distractions are everywhere. The battle between the flesh and the spirit is real—and constant. For believers, the key to victory isn’t trying harder in our own strength but focusing more deeply on Jesus and choosing to walk daily in the Spirit. But what does it really mean to do that?

Let’s explore what the Bible says and how you can apply this in your everyday life to walk in victory and deeper relationship with God.

What Is the Flesh?

The "flesh" in Scripture doesn't just mean your physical body—it refers to the sinful nature, the part of you that leans away from God’s will and toward selfish desires.

Galatians 5:16 (KJV) says:

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

This verse makes it clear: walking in the Spirit isn't just a suggestion—it's the antidote to the cravings and temptations that try to pull us away from God. When we walk in the Spirit, we choose God’s way over our way, His power over our weakness.

What Does It Mean to Focus on Jesus?

Focusing on Jesus is more than acknowledging Him with our lips—it’s setting our hearts, minds, and lives on Him.

Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) says:

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross…”

To "look unto Jesus" is to keep your eyes fixed on Him as your ultimate goal, guide, and example. Jesus endured the cross, despised the shame, and finished the work set before Him. Likewise, we are called to run our race with endurance by keeping Him at the center of everything.

When you're focused on Jesus:

  • You prioritize His voice over the world’s noise.
  • You seek His will before your own.
  • You find strength in His grace, not in your effort.

Walking in the Spirit Means Daily Surrender

Romans 8:1 (KJV) tells us:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

When we walk in the Spirit, we’re living in a place of surrender and sensitivity to God's leading. It's a daily decision, sometimes one moment at a time, but you will obey the Spirit rather than the impulses of our flesh.

It's not perfection—it’s direction.

Signs You're Walking in the Spirit

The Bible gives us fruit to look for:

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV):

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance…”

If you're walking in the Spirit, these qualities will begin to grow and be seen in your life. They don’t pop up overnight, but like any fruit, they grow with time, care, and connection to the source—Jesus Christ.

How to Focus on Jesus and Walk in the Spirit Daily

1. Spend Daily Time in the Word
Psalm 119:105 (KJV) says:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Reading the Bible renews your mind and aligns your heart with God’s truth.

2. Pray Continually
Talking with God builds intimacy and gives the Spirit room to guide you.

3. Surrender Your Desires
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you say “no” to sin and “yes” to God’s will.

4. Stay in Christian Community
Iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17). Surround yourself with people who encourage your walk with Christ.

5. Fast When You Feel Spiritually Dull
Fasting silences the flesh and amplifies the Spirit.

Don’t Try to Win the Battle Alone

John 15:5 (KJV):

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

Trying to fight the flesh without abiding in Christ is a losing battle. But abiding in Him—resting, staying connected, and trusting—will produce strength and fruit you never thought possible.

Final Encouragement

The Christian walk isn’t about behavior modification; it’s about spiritual transformation. When you keep your eyes on Jesus and walk in step with the Spirit, the desires of the flesh will lose their grip.

You were never meant to fight sin on your own. Victory comes through the Spirit, by the power of Jesus, for the glory of God.

If this helped you...

…share it with a friend who could benefit from this encouragement. You never know who needs the reminder that they’re not alone and that Jesus is still in the business of transforming hearts.
