We Are Dirt: How God Plants Seeds in Us to Bear Fruit
Matthew BellShare
Have you ever thought about why God made us from dirt? In Genesis, we learn that God formed man from the dust of the ground, shaping us with His own hands. While this might seem like a humbling reality, it also reveals a powerful truth—dirt is where life grows. Just as soil receives seeds and produces fruit, our hearts are meant to receive God's Word and bear spiritual fruit.
In this blog, we’ll explore what it means to be dirt, how God plants His truth in us, and how we can cultivate a life that bears fruit for His Kingdom.
We Were Made from Dirt for a Purpose
God could have created us from anything—gold, precious gems, or even the stars—but He chose dirt. Why? Because dirt has the unique ability to receive, sustain, and produce life.
Genesis 2:7 – “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
Dirt on its own is lifeless, but when God breathes into it, it becomes something valuable. The same is true for us—without God, we are just dust. But with Him, we have life, purpose, and the ability to grow.
How to Apply This Truth:
- Recognize that your value comes from God, not from the world.
- Stay open to God’s work in your life, just as soil stays open to receive seeds.
- Remember that your purpose is to grow in Him and bear fruit.
Our Hearts Are Like Soil That Receives Seeds
Jesus often used farming and planting to explain spiritual truths. In the Parable of the Sower, He compared different types of hearts to different types of soil.
Luke 8:11, 15 – “The seed is the word of God... But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.”
Just like soil receives seeds, our hearts are meant to receive God's Word. But not all soil is ready for planting—some is hard, rocky, or full of weeds. If we want to bear fruit, we must cultivate our hearts to be like good soil.
How to Apply This Truth:
- Spend time in God’s Word so His truth can take root in your heart.
- Remove distractions and sins that keep you from growing spiritually.
- Be patient—growth takes time, but God is faithful to bring fruit.
Good Soil Bears Good Fruit
Dirt is not valuable unless something grows in it. Likewise, our lives should produce the fruits of the Spirit—evidence of God’s work in us.
Galatians 5:22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
When we allow God to plant His truth in our hearts, we begin to see changes in our character. We love more deeply, extend grace more freely, and reflect Christ in our daily lives.
How to Apply This Truth:
- Examine your life—what kind of fruit are you producing?
- Stay connected to God through prayer and His Word to remain spiritually nourished.
- Trust that even in difficult seasons, God is working to grow something good in you.
We Must Stay Humble Like Dirt
Dirt doesn’t take credit for the crops it produces—it simply receives and allows growth to happen. In the same way, we must stay humble, knowing that any good in us comes from God.
John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
We can’t grow on our own. Just as plants need water, sun, and nutrients, we need God’s presence to thrive.
How to Apply This Truth:
- Give God the glory for any growth or success in your life.
- Stay teachable, always ready to receive more from Him.
- Encourage others to grow in their faith, just as God is growing you.
Final Thoughts
Being made from dirt is not an insult—it’s an invitation. It reminds us that we are created to receive God’s Word, grow in His truth, and bear fruit that blesses others.
So, the next time you see dirt, remember: It may seem ordinary, but it holds the potential for life, just as you do when you remain in Christ.
