We Are Dirt: Staying Humble in Light of Our Creation
Matthew BellShare
Have you ever thought about where you came from? The Bible tells us that God formed us from the dust of the earth. While this truth might seem humbling, it’s also a powerful reminder of who we are and why we need to stay grounded in humility.
In this blog, we’ll explore what it means to be made from dirt, why humility is essential in our walk with Christ, and how embracing this truth can deepen our faith.
We Were Created from Dirt
From the very beginning, God formed humanity from the earth, showing both His power and our dependence on Him.
Genesis 2:7 – “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
God could have created us from gold, diamonds, or anything else, but He chose dust—something ordinary, fragile, and easily blown away. This reminds us that without Him, we are nothing. It is His breath, not our own strength, that gives us life.
How to Apply This Truth:
- Recognize that everything you have comes from God.
- Remember that your worth isn’t in your status, achievements, or possessions but in Him.
- Stay humble, knowing that we are all equally made from the same dust.
Pride Leads to Destruction, But Humility Leads to Grace
Since we are made from dust, there’s no room for pride. Everything we are and everything we have is because of God’s grace.
Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Pride causes us to forget that we are dust. It makes us think we are self-sufficient, but the truth is, without God, we would return to the ground from which we came.
On the other hand, humility invites God’s favor into our lives.
James 4:6 – “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
How to Apply This Truth:
- Give God the glory for your successes instead of taking credit for yourself.
- Treat others with kindness and respect, knowing we are all equal before God.
- Seek to serve rather than be served.
We Will Return to the Dust
No matter how rich, powerful, or famous someone becomes, we all return to the same place—dust.
Ecclesiastes 3:20 – “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”
This reality should keep us humble. Life is short, and our time on earth is temporary. What truly matters is how we live for God and love others, not how much we achieve in this world.
How to Apply This Truth:
- Focus on eternal things rather than temporary success.
- Live with humility, knowing that everything you have is a gift from God.
- Serve God faithfully, knowing that one day you will stand before Him.
God Uses the Lowly for His Glory
Throughout the Bible, God chooses the humble and the weak to accomplish His greatest works. He takes what seems insignificant and makes it powerful.
1 Corinthians 1:27 – “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”
Being made from dirt doesn’t mean we are worthless—it means we are vessels that God can shape for His purpose.
How to Apply This Truth:
- Allow God to mold you into the person He created you to be.
- Don’t feel discouraged if you feel small or insignificant—God delights in using the humble.
- Stay available for His work, no matter how ordinary you feel.
Final Thoughts
We were made from dirt, and one day, we will return to it. This truth should humble us and remind us that without God, we are nothing. Yet, because of His love, He gives us life, purpose, and grace.
Let’s live with humility, remembering our origins and relying on God in everything we do. True greatness isn’t found in pride but in recognizing our dependence on Him.
