What Does the Bible Say About Astrology and Zodiac Signs?
Matthew BellShare
Astrology has become increasingly popular in today’s culture. From daily horoscopes to zodiac signs, many people look to the stars for answers about their identity, future, and purpose. But as believers, we must ask—what does the Bible say about astrology? Is it harmless fun, or does it lead us away from the truth of God?
Scripture makes it clear that seeking spiritual direction from anything other than God, including the stars, is not only misleading—it’s dangerous.
God Forbids Divination and Stargazing for Guidance
In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, God strictly warns His people:
“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
“Observer of times” refers to astrology—using celestial patterns to predict events or seek guidance. God calls these practices an abomination because they shift our trust from Him to created things.
God Created the Stars—But Not to Guide Us Spiritually
God did create the stars, but for a specific purpose. In Genesis 1:14, we read:
“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.”
The stars were made to mark time, not to tell us who we are or what will happen in our future. Worshipping or relying on them for direction dishonors their Creator.
The Danger of Replacing God with Creation
In Romans 1:25, Paul speaks about people who turned from God:
“Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”
Astrology encourages people to seek identity and wisdom from creation (the stars) instead of the Creator (God). This opens the door to deception and pulls people away from true spiritual freedom.
The Stars Can’t Save You—Only God Can
In Isaiah 47:13-14, God rebukes Babylon for its reliance on astrologers:
“Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame.”
This passage exposes the failure of astrologers to save or provide real answers. Only God holds the future, and only He can deliver us from what’s to come.
Why Turning to Astrology Is Spiritually Dangerous
When we engage with astrology, even casually, we open ourselves to deception. It teaches us to define our worth and make decisions based on signs and birth charts rather than God’s Word and Spirit. This practice replaces trust in God with trust in a system rooted in ancient paganism and occultism.
God desires a personal relationship with us, where we seek Him directly for wisdom and guidance—not through stars or signs, but through prayer, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit.
Final Thoughts
Astrology may seem harmless or trendy, but the Bible is clear: it pulls our hearts away from God and places our trust in created things. As believers, we are called to worship the Creator, not creation. If you’ve dabbled in astrology, now is the time to turn back to God, repent, and let Him guide every part of your life.
