Why You Should Volunteer: A Perspective on Serving Others
Matthew BellShare
In a world that often promotes self-interest, the act of volunteering stands as a powerful reflection of Christ’s love. As believers, we are called not only to believe in Jesus but to follow His example—and Jesus was a servant at heart. Volunteering isn't just a good deed—it’s a spiritual discipline and a way to bring glory to God.
If you’ve ever wondered why volunteering matters in the Christian life, the Bible has clear answers.
1. Jesus Came to Serve—Not to Be Served
In Matthew 20:28, Jesus says:
"Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."
Jesus Christ, the King of kings, didn’t come to be served, but to serve others—even to the point of laying down His life. If our Savior humbled Himself to serve, how much more should we be willing to do the same?
2. Serving Others Is Serving God
In Matthew 25:40, Jesus reminds us:
"Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
Every act of service, no matter how small, is seen by God. When you volunteer at church, help the poor, or serve someone in need, you are ultimately serving Christ Himself.
3. We Are Created to Do Good Works
God didn’t save us just so we could go to heaven—He saved us to live out our faith. Ephesians 2:10 says:
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
Volunteering is part of walking in the “good works” God has planned for you. It’s a response to His grace—not a way to earn it.
4. Volunteering Helps Grow the Church Body
In 1 Corinthians 12:14, Paul writes:
"For the body is not one member, but many."
The church functions like a body, and each believer has a role. When you volunteer, whether it’s teaching children, cleaning, singing, or helping behind the scenes, you're helping the body of Christ operate in unity.
5. Volunteering Builds Humility and Compassion
In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul encourages:
"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others."
Volunteering takes your eyes off yourself and places them on the needs of others. It molds your heart to look more like Jesus—humble, compassionate, and others-focused.
Final Thoughts
Volunteering isn’t just a task—it’s an act of worship. It's a tangible way to reflect the love of Christ to a world that desperately needs it. As you serve others, your faith grows, your heart softens, and the Kingdom of God advances.
