Your Identity in Christ: No Longer Identified by Sin
Matthew BellShare
One of the most powerful truths in Christianity is that when you accept Jesus as your Savior, you are no longer defined by your past sins. Many believers struggle with guilt, shame, and an old mindset of failure, but the Bible makes it clear: In Christ, you are made new. Understanding this truth is essential to walking in the freedom and identity God has given you.
You Are a New Creation in Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
When you accept Jesus, your identity changes. You are no longer a sinner defined by your mistakes; you are a new creation. This means that your past failures, regrets, and wrongdoings no longer have power over your life.
You Are No Longer a Slave to Sin
Romans 6:6 (NLT) – “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.”
Before salvation, sin ruled over you, but through Jesus, that power is broken. While believers may still struggle with temptation, sin no longer defines who you are. You are now a child of God, not a prisoner to your past.
God Sees You as Righteous Through Christ
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV) – “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Jesus took your sins upon Himself so that you could take on His righteousness. When God looks at you, He doesn’t see your past mistakes—He sees the righteousness of Jesus covering you.
Your Identity is in Christ, Not in Your Past
Galatians 2:20 (ESV) – “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
Your identity is no longer found in who you were—it’s found in who Jesus is. You are redeemed, loved, and chosen by God. Stop identifying yourself by your past, and start seeing yourself the way God does.
You Are Called to Walk in Holiness
Romans 6:11 (NIV) – “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
Though you may still be tempted, the Bible calls you to see yourself as dead to sin. This means you no longer live under its influence but instead, walk in the new life Christ has given you.
Stop Calling Yourself What God No Longer Calls You
Many Christians still label themselves by their past mistakes—sinner, failure, unworthy. But if God calls you forgiven, righteous, and new, why hold on to the old labels?
The Bible Calls You:
✅ A child of God (John 1:12)
✅ More than a conqueror (Romans 8:37)
✅ Forgiven and redeemed (Ephesians 1:7)
✅ A temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Final Thoughts: Walk in Your New Identity
When Jesus saves you, He doesn’t just forgive you—He transforms you. You are no longer defined by sin, but by His grace, love, and righteousness. Instead of living in guilt and shame, embrace the new identity God has given you and walk confidently in His freedom
