What the Bible Teaches About Fortune-Telling, Tarot Cards, and Psychics

Matthew Bell

In today’s world, many people are searching for answers — about their future, their purpose, and their pain. It’s easy to turn to things that promise quick insight, like tarot cards, horoscopes, or psychic readings. But as Christians, our source of truth and guidance must always come from God’s Word, not from the spiritual counterfeits that the enemy uses to distract and deceive.

Let’s explore what the Bible says about these practices, why they’re spiritually dangerous, and how we can rely on the Holy Spirit for true wisdom and direction.

God Forbids Seeking Knowledge from Spiritual Mediums

Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (KJV) says:

“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD...”

This passage is very clear — God condemns divination, fortune-telling, and all forms of spirit consultation. Divination includes tarot cards, astrology, and psychic readings. These practices attempt to access hidden knowledge that only God should reveal. When people seek guidance from these sources, they are stepping into spiritual territory that belongs to Satan and his fallen angels, not God.

Psychic Readings Open the Door to Deception

Psychics may seem to “know things” about people, but their information doesn’t come from God. Many times, it’s either guesswork or demonic influence designed to mimic truth and create dependency.

2 Corinthians 11:14 (KJV) warns:

“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

The devil’s greatest tactic is deception. He makes evil look appealing, helpful, and even spiritual. A psychic might appear kind and insightful, but their power does not come from the Holy Spirit. By entertaining these readings, people unknowingly invite spiritual oppression and confusion into their lives.

True Guidance Comes Through the Holy Spirit

When Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised that the Holy Spirit would guide believers into all truth. We don’t need tarot cards or spiritual readers to understand God’s will.

John 16:13 (KJV) says:

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth...”

The Holy Spirit leads us gently and truthfully. He reveals God’s plans at the right time and brings peace, not anxiety or fear. Unlike tarot readings that depend on chance or mystical forces, the Spirit’s guidance comes from a relationship with God Himself.

The Bible Warns Against Consulting the Dead

Many psychics claim to connect people with deceased loved ones. This practice is directly forbidden in Scripture.

Leviticus 19:31 (KJV) says:

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.”

Consulting the dead (or “familiar spirits”) is not communication with your loved one — it’s contact with demonic forces pretending to be them. These spirits deceive people by mimicking voices or memories, drawing them away from faith in Jesus.

Saul’s Downfall Is a Cautionary Tale

In 1 Samuel 28, King Saul, desperate for answers, consulted a medium to summon the spirit of Samuel. Though the true prophet appeared by God’s will, Saul’s action cost him dearly. It revealed his lack of faith and disobedience to God’s commands.

Saul’s tragic story reminds us that when we step outside of God’s boundaries for wisdom, we invite judgment, confusion, and spiritual chaos. God desires that we come to Him directly, not through forbidden channels.

Our Future Is in God’s Hands, Not in the Cards

Tarot cards and psychic readings promise to tell us what lies ahead — but only God knows the future.

Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) declares:

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

When we trust God’s plan, we can walk confidently even without knowing every detail of our future. Tarot readings replace faith with fear and curiosity with control. God calls us to trust Him, even when we don’t see the full picture.

Christians Are Called to Walk by Faith, Not by Sight

2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV) says:

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Tarot cards, psychic visions, and horoscopes appeal to our desire for control and certainty. But faith requires trust in God’s unseen plan. When we rely on these tools, we show a lack of trust in the One who holds all things together.

Repentance and Freedom Through Christ

If you’ve ever been involved in tarot, astrology, or psychic practices — there is hope. Jesus offers forgiveness and freedom from spiritual bondage.

Acts 19:18–19 (KJV) says:

“And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men...”

This shows how early believers repented and publicly turned away from witchcraft and divination. In Christ, you can be cleansed from all involvement in occult practices. Burn, delete, or throw away anything connected to those activities — and replace it with prayer, worship, and the Word of God.

Final Encouragement: The Light Overcomes the Darkness

No form of darkness, no matter how enticing or “spiritual” it looks, can stand against the light of Jesus Christ. The enemy uses things like tarot and psychic readings to imitate the truth, but the peace of God is only found in His Word and His presence.

John 8:12 (KJV) says:

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

When you follow Jesus, you no longer need to search for answers through rituals or readings. You have the Light Himself guiding you every step of the way.

Conclusion

God calls His people to rely on His Word, not worldly methods, for direction. Tarot cards, psychic readings, and astrology only bring spiritual confusion and distraction. True peace, clarity, and purpose come from a relationship with Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

If this helped you, share it with a friend who could benefit from this.
Let’s continue to point one another back to the truth of God’s Word and the freedom that comes through Jesus Christ.
