How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say

Matthew Bell

Have you ever sat down to pray and found yourself struggling to form the words? You may feel overwhelmed, empty, or unsure of how to approach God. You’re not alone—many Christians, even those mature in their faith, go through seasons when prayer feels hard. The good news is that the Bible offers both comfort and guidance for moments like these.

In this blog, we’ll explore how to pray when you don’t know what to say, what Scripture teaches us about God’s understanding, and how to draw near to Him even in silence or confusion.

God Already Knows Your Heart

Before you even open your mouth, God knows what you need. Jesus Himself said:

“For your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”Matthew 6:8, KJV

This doesn’t mean prayer is pointless—it means you don’t need perfect words to be heard. God isn’t impressed by eloquence; He desires your heart. When you don’t know what to say, start by simply being still before Him.

Sometimes all it takes is, “Lord, I don’t have the words, but I need You.” That’s more than enough.

Let the Holy Spirit Intercede for You

One of the most encouraging truths in Scripture is that we are not alone when we pray. The Holy Spirit helps us pray—even when we can’t form the words.

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”Romans 8:26, KJV

When your heart is heavy, trust that the Spirit is speaking on your behalf. God hears even your sighs and silent tears. You don’t need to perform—just be present with Him.

Use Scripture as Your Prayer

If you’re lost for words, let God’s Word give you a voice. The Psalms, in particular, are full of raw emotion—joy, sorrow, fear, hope—and can guide your heart toward honest communication with God.

Here are a few examples to start with:

  • Psalm 61:2 – “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
  • Psalm 51:10 – “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
  • Psalm 34:17 – “The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”

Reading these aloud or journaling them as prayers can draw you closer to God, even when your own words are missing.

Pray Honestly and Simply

God doesn’t need fancy language. He invites you to come to Him as you are—whether broken, confused, or joyful.

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”Philippians 4:6, KJV

Talk to Him like you would a loving Father. You can say:

  • “God, I’m overwhelmed.”
  • “Lord, I don’t know what to pray.”
  • “Jesus, help me.”

These are real, powerful prayers. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes.

Listen More Than You Speak

Prayer is not just talking to God—it’s also listening. When you don’t have the words, spend time in quiet. Sit with an open heart and ask God to speak to you through His Word, through the Holy Spirit, or even through silence.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”Psalm 46:10, KJV

You don’t always need to fill the space. God works in stillness, too.

Worship When Words Fail

Sometimes, turning on worship music can help lift your spirit and reconnect your heart with God. Singing songs that declare His truth can be a form of prayer. Even humming or silently reflecting on the lyrics can draw you into His presence.

Ask Others to Pray With You

There is strength in community. When you’re struggling to pray, don’t hesitate to ask a trusted friend or pastor to pray with or for you.

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”Matthew 18:20, KJV

Let someone stand in the gap for you when your faith feels weak. God honors unity and shared prayer.

Start Small—God Honors Your Effort

You don’t have to pray for hours. A simple, honest conversation with God—even just a few sentences—is a meaningful step. Keep showing up. Consistency, not perfection, is what builds a strong prayer life.

Conclusion: God Hears Even When You Can’t Speak

When you don’t know what to say in prayer, don’t let that stop you from coming to God. He’s not looking for the perfect words—He’s looking for a surrendered heart. Trust that He sees you, hears you, and loves you.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” – James 4:8, KJV

Even your silence can be a sacred offering. He is near to the brokenhearted and patient with our weakness. Just come.

If this helped you, share it with a friend who could benefit from this encouragement. You never know who might be waiting for a reminder that God listens—even when we can’t find the words.
