How Jesus Is God – Biblical Proof from the Old and New Testaments

Matthew Bell

One of the most profound and foundational truths of Christianity is this: Jesus Christ is God. While some may argue that Jesus was simply a prophet, a teacher, or a good man, the Bible clearly and repeatedly affirms His divine nature.

From Genesis to Revelation, both the Old and New Testaments point to Jesus not just as the Son of God, but as God Himself—eternal, all-powerful, and worthy of worship.

In this post, we’ll walk through key scriptures from both Testaments, using the King James Version (KJV), to show without a doubt that Jesus is God. Let’s dig in.

Old Testament Prophecy of the Divine Messiah – Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

Explanation:

This verse is a prophecy about the coming Messiah, fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Notice that the child who is born is not only called “Wonderful” and “Counsellor,” but “The mighty God” and “The everlasting Father.” These are titles that belong to God alone.

Isaiah was clearly foretelling that the Messiah would be divine, not just a messenger or servant—but God in the flesh.

The Lord Will Come – Zechariah 14:3-5

“Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle…
and his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives…”
Zechariah 14:3-4 (KJV)

Explanation:

This prophecy says the LORD (Yahweh) Himself will stand on the Mount of Olives to battle the nations. In the New Testament, Jesus ascends from the Mount of Olives and is prophesied to return to the same place (Acts 1:9-12). This directly connects Jesus with the identity of the LORD in the Old Testament.

Jesus is the “I AM” – John 8:58

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”John 8:58 (KJV)

Explanation:

Jesus didn’t say, “I was.” He said, “I AM,” directly referencing Exodus 3:14, where God tells Moses:

“I AM THAT I AM”Exodus 3:14 (KJV)

By using this divine name, Jesus was declaring He is the eternal God, existing before Abraham and outside of time. The Jews knew this—which is why they immediately tried to stone Him for blasphemy (John 8:59).

The Word Was God – John 1:1-3, 14

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him…”
John 1:1-3 (KJV)

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…”John 1:14 (KJV)

Explanation:

These verses clearly teach that Jesus (the Word) is God. He existed from the beginning, He made everything, and then became flesh—meaning He came to earth in human form. This is the doctrine of the incarnation: God became man in the person of Jesus Christ.

God Calls the Son “God” – Hebrews 1:8

“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever…”Hebrews 1:8 (KJV)

Explanation:

Here, God the Father is speaking to God the Son, and He explicitly calls Him “O God.” This verse not only confirms Jesus' deity but shows the relationship within the Godhead (Trinity) in which Father and Son are distinct, yet both are fully God.

Emmanuel – “God With Us” – Matthew 1:23

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Matthew 1:23 (KJV)

Explanation:

Matthew directly quotes Isaiah 7:14, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy. The name “Emmanuel” isn’t just symbolic—it declares that God literally came to dwell among His people in the person of Jesus.

Jesus Forgives Sin – Mark 2:5-7

“When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?”
Mark 2:5-7 (KJV)

Explanation:

The religious leaders were right about one thing: only God can forgive sins. And yet, Jesus did just that. By forgiving sin, Jesus was acting with divine authority—because He is God.

Jesus Receives Worship – Revelation 5:11-14

“…Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne,
and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.”
Revelation 5:13 (KJV)

Explanation:

Jesus (the Lamb) receives the same worship as God who sits on the throne. No angel, prophet, or righteous man in the Bible ever receives worship without correction. But Jesus does—because He is worthy.

Why It Matters That Jesus Is God

Believing that Jesus is God is not optional—it is essential to true Christian faith. If Jesus were not God, His death would not be sufficient to atone for the sins of the world. But because He is both fully God and fully man, He could live a perfect life and offer Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for us.

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”Colossians 2:9 (KJV)
